HOME BY MCKENZIE - LOVE

To feel cared for, to feel the comfort of one’s tenderness, and to extend that outwards is to open one’s heart, soul, and spirit to sharing the heights of our happiness, and the instability of our uncertainty, to breathe heavily at the end of a phone line knowing we will be collected, held, and supported at the other end. To be open to finding intimacy is to be open to finding disappointment, to navigate difficult conversations because no matter how challenging, it’s easier than accepting the loss of that person without trying. To bathe in the heat of a laugh so deep it fills the atmosphere with a tang so infectious that together even years later, we can so easily tap back into that moment shared with one that we love in the cushioned hammock of our bond. To accept the respect, trust, responsibility, knowledge, care and commitment - as described by bell hooks - needed to accept one’s love we must find within ourselves the sunshine that our loved ones so easily see.

FOXES

Disrupting beliefs and morals, and tearing the foundations of family apart, Foxes explores the complexities of sexual identity and the impact unleashing your true self can have on those around you.

This fierce debut, shortlisted for the Alfred Fagen Award, shines a light on queerness within London’s Caribbean Community. KEEP ON MOVING

After an acclaimed performance at Keep On Moving last year, Meron T is now presenting her self curated show, definitely not one to be missed 💫
Meron T is a vocalist, singer-songwriter from South London. Her music takes roots in R&B, with a soulful and jazzy twist sitting on the more mellow side of hip hop, gently riding the more trap heavy 808’s. Meron attempts to soothe her listeners with smooth and warm vocals, contrasting heavier productions. There has been a growing hype over the rising star, 2021 saw the songstress release the A/B side project ‘Dailyy / Crazy out of Love’ alongside her main collaborator Sey G, which made it onto Jamz Supernova’s Top 5 EP on BBCXtra radio station. Last year, she notably joined a long list of rising UK talent as an awardee of the MOBO x Help Musicians Fund. Having started off 2022 with the recent release of ‘Everything’, there is much to be expected from Meron this year. Keep your ears peeled.

KEHINDE WILEY

In this exhibition, Wiley will shift his focus from one European tradition - Grand Manner portraiture – to another – landscape painting.

Through new artworks, including film and painting, Wiley will look at European Romanticism and its focus on epic scenes of oceans and mountains, building relationships with our collection of historical landscapes and seascapes by Turner, Claude, Vernet and Friedrich.

Like his work before, this new work will look back at Old Masters as a way to create new connections and raise fresh questions.

QUEEN OF SHEBA

Turned away from a nightclub for being “too black”, four women take to the stage with their own explosive true stories: the music and the misogyny, the dancing and the drinking, the women and, of course, the (white) men.

Loosely based on the DSTRKT nightspot incident of 2015, Queens of Sheba tells the hilarious, moving and uplifting stories of four passionate Black Women battling every-day misogynoir; where sexism meets racism

Smith plays Richard Williams, the intensely driven father of young tennis protegés Venus and Serena. The movie focuses on Richard's attempts to school his daughters in the art of the sport, shaping them for greatness even at the expense of the relationship with his own family.

It's expected that Smith will add to his two previous Oscar nominations (for 2001's Ali and 2006's The Pursuit of Happyness).  Check out the trailer and get a flavour of the behind the scenes story that forever shaped the future of tennis.

BOTIS SEVA’S BLKDOG

Vital and gripping, BLKDOG is  Botis Seva’s haunting commentary on surviving adulthood as a childlike artist. A genre-defying blend of hip hop dance and free form antics, BLKDOG explores the inner battlefield of an ageing artist trying to retain his youth.

With a pounding, brooding score the music adds layers of meaning highlighting the inner working of the characters minds. The music has grown from a long standing collaboration with Torben Lars Sylvest and includes a mixture of original music and words performed by Botis’ powerhouse company Far From The Norm and guests. Tom Visser’s lighting brings a dark smog of disillusion as the choreography delves into the underbelly of life, while the hooded caps and padded costumes by Ryan Laight echo the protection and comfort of childhood. BLKDOG searches for coping mechanisms in the ultimate hunt for acceptance.

Their work often features expressive mark making and the use of deliberate, flat vivid blocks of colour to create figurative renderings.

“This imaginary club became a vision for me, a space that symbolised gender euphoria and speaks specifically to my own experience with understanding and celebrating my trans identity and my journey with learning music. I was inspired by the main character in the book Trumpet by Jackie Kay which I later learnt was based on the real life story of musician Billy Tipton. Thinking of how music, specifically Jazz, allowed both the fictional character and the real musician Billy to find a home for themselves.” Joy Yamusangie

From jewellery and dresses to armour and environmental protection, the show highlights the qualities of hair as a material. It also explores our complex relationship with hair both on, and off, our heads – how and why we care so much about our hair, and how hair is entangled with society’s expectations and our relationships to others.

BETWEEN ME & YOU-16th jan

HOME presents Bernice Mulenga’s debut solo exhibition; Between Me and You, depicting joyous moments captured on film. Mulenga notes: “As a teenager, I wasn’t documented”. The large-scale photographic images from their series #friendsonfilm, are part of Bernice’s ongoing documentation of their life and the community around them.

While primarily presenting members of the Black Queer community, the images hint at the underlying issues of the Black British experience. Mulenga’s focus has been predominantly capturing moments, using differing images to reinforce the notion of connection. With the knowledge that memories situate us, help us to navigate our lives more fully thereby engaging in our life experience, Bernice’s pictorial account affords us a way to help deepen the experience. This archival journey, which Bernice began in 2015, is seen as akin to coming of age, growing with time.

CARE, CONTAGION, COMMUNITY - SELF & OTHER- 22ND JAN

Located as the symbolic bond between care and community, the word ‘contagion’ – its original meaning being ‘together’, and ‘to touch’ – evokes images of close contact, as well as ideas of potential exposure and transmission. What are the new implications of touch, of close relationships between the self and the other, or the lack thereof in a time of isolation and separation? How might we be better together as a community in the future? How to protect those who risk their lives in their commitment to care for others, working on multiple frontlines? What kinds of support structures might we need, to help us navigate such unprecedented times, both collectively and individually?

I SURRENDER MY BODY TO WATER AND FIRE-23RD JAN

Daniela Yohannes (b. 1982) lives and works in Guadeloupe, in the French Caribbean. Yohannes’ latest body of work is a response to contemporary migration discourse, rendered through a personal, emotive, and Diasporic lens. These paintings meditate on and lament issues surrounding politics of place, freedom of movement, and the desperate actions people take to survive. The artist explores the hardship of a severed connection with homeland and community, while also confronting the devastating impact of treacherous migratory journeys. These paintings bear particular witness to the perils of the Eritrean people, with whom she shares an identity and a homeland.
